| | | Upon graduation from Banks County High School, Steve went to work at Craven Pottery in Gillsville as an hourly employee doing general work. He learned in time to turn clay and became a large gallon turner. During his tenure with Craven Pottery, which lasted twenty-seven years and twenty-six days, he was manager of the "hand made" division for seventeen years. In July of 1993 he decided that he would relinquish his managers job and return to the wheel full time.
In 1993 Steve began to work at home to create "glazed ware", which he will willingly admit that it is what he always wanted to do. He uses bright colors on his ware as well as variations of "tobacco spit" glaze. He creates utilitarian ware as well as roosters, and face jugs. He has been innovative in his creation of "Siamese" jugs, "Chicken-head Chief", and "Featherhead Chief". His daughter Abby has started to make small chickens, and wonderful face and snake jugs. Steve is and will continue to be collectable not only because of his innovation, but also because twenty-seven years and twenty-six day of practice means quality. Abby too is establishing her own following.
Our Art Gallery also has work by Reverend Howard Finster, Inez Nathaniel Walker, William Edmondson, Thornton Dial, Missionary Mary Proctor, Miz Thang, Nancy Valelly, R A Miller, Jimmy Lee Sudduth, Mose Tolliver, folk pottery and all the great outsiders new or old.
